GA DUI News: A New Drug Test May Effect Drugged Driving Arrests

Drugged Driving arrests in Georgia may be on the rise soon.  Breathalysers have long been used to aid in DUI arrests in Georgia and everywhere else.  They allow law enforcement agencies to determine The BAC, Blood Alcohol Content, of drivers to effectively determine whether or not they are within the legal limits.  Driver's under the influence of drugs have been able to avoid such testing.  This may soon change.  Though it is not used by law enforcement yet, a new device makes drug testing as simple as a breathalyzer.

As no one wants to encounter drugged drivers on the road, this new drug testing device seems like a long needed technological advancement.  The problem will arise when innocent driver's are arrested for a DUI, DWI or other drugged driving test in Georgia. Below is a brief synopsis of how the new drug testing device works.  Errors are already apparent in the new technology.

How does this  new drug testing device work?

When a person uses a substance, his body breaks down the drug, and in the process creates certain chemical byproducts. These chemicals come out in a person's sweat, including the tiny amount of sweat found in a fingerprint. A liquid containing gold nanoparticles covered in antibodies can be used to coat a fingerprint, and the antibodies latch onto these chemical byproducts. Then, within 15 minutes, a colored fluorescent dye reveals the signature chemicals created by the breakdown of drugs. It's unclear whether the drug test would pick up only on relatively recent drug use, or drug use from several days earlier, too.

It is also unclear what sort of trace amounts of illegal drugs will show up on the new test.  It analyses the sweat from your finger print.  Studies show that nearly all U.S. currency carries trace amounts of cocaine.  Could you be arrested for a DUI simply because you handled cash.
