What You Should Never Do at Hartsfield-Jackson

If you will count yourself among the hundreds of thousands of people who will be traveling by air this holiday season, you may want to keep in mind a few things about airport behavior. While some of the things you may do could have a few curious glances thrown your way, other things could land you in hot water with law enforcement. Here are some things you should never do at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International or any other airport.

1. Talk About Anything Illegal

TSA agents aren’t known for their sense of humor, and they have heard it all before. Keep jokes about weapons, drugs or other illegal items to yourself. The agents will pull you out of line for your own private search quicker than you know.

2. Keep Things In Your Pockets

It takes more time to decide if you can keep things on your person than it does to put them in the bin. Empty your pockets completely, take off your shoes and remove your jacket. Don’t be the person that holds up the entire security line.

3. Be Rude

TSA agents have a job to do. They screen close to 2 million passengers a day. Don’t be rude and make their job more difficult. If you are selected for a random search, do as you are asked and complain about it later.

4. Forget to Label Your Items

You will be separated by your bags at some point during your trek through the airport. If you haven’t purchased a bag that stands out from the rest, don’t forget to label your belongings, preferably with something bright or otherwise unique to you. Even if your possessions are taken out of your hands, keep an eye on them for as long as you can.

5. Touch Someone Else’s Stuff

It’s not illegal to touch someone’s belongings, but it can pose a security threat. Be patient and wait for that person to move their belongings on their own. If someone is really taking that long or you notice the same bag going round and round on the carousel, alert an agent.

6. Carry a Weapon

If you have a carry license in the state of Georgia, you can carry your weapon on airport property, but only in the parking lot, the main lobby, the main walkway and shops in the terminal. You may not take your weapon through or beyond security. If you somehow make it through security with your weapon and are then found to be in possession of it, you will be charged with a crime. The exact crime you are charged with will depend on the unique set of circumstances, but it will likely be quite serious.
