Officer Thanked by Man He Arrested for DUI
Police aren’t often thanked by the people they arrest, but that is exactly what happened to a Tyrone Police Officer last week.
According to a report from Tyrone Police Department, Sgt. Jacob Collins pulled a man over after the man drove down Highway 47 in the wrong lane. The man was, in fact, in the turn lane and continued straight, running off the road. The driver of the vehicle was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence.
Police Chief Brandon Perkins got a letter in the mail on Monday from the man that Collins arrested. It said, in part, “I was severely intoxicated. He saved my life and the lives of others and I truly appreciate his actions and his efforts.”
The chief said that the department receives thank you cards and notes when officers change tires, solve crimes, or do other generally good things. They have never, to date, received a letter of thanks from someone that has been arrested. The letter goes on: “What officers do everyday matters and we appreciate it.”
Perkins said that in light of the negative publicity surrounding police and law enforcement lately, having a member of the public thank the police highlights the good these men and women do every day.
